The Kenya Coast, Mombasa, Lamu, Kiwayu
The coastal town Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya. Located
in south-east of Kenya, it is an excellent haven for beach lovers and
also acts as the gateway to the entire Kenya Coast. Mombasa and its environs
is one of the best places in Africa to locate white sandy beaches and
the warm waters has given way to a coral reef that is the delight of deep
sea divers. Rich in a history that extends beyond a thousand years with
a wealth of cultures that are a result of trading with a variety of people
that include the Indians, the Arabs, the Portuguese and the English, Mombasa
definitely has an allure that can rarely be resisted by the traveler.
In 1498 a Portuguese explorer called Vasco da Gama came to Mombasa. Mombasa
became a main trading centre along the east coast of Africa. Today you
can view history at Fort Jesus, that served as headquarter for trading
goods, a prison for slaves and of course protecting Portuguese from conflicts.
Mombasa is heavily influenced by Arabic culture and the heart of the town
has many shops, markets and other businesses as well as an exciting nightlife.
