Zanzibar
Island Attractions
Located 35 km from mainland Tanzania, the island of Zanzibar is
a fascinating place that has been influenced by various cultures throughout
its vivid history. Under the Omani Arabs, it became a trading center for
all of East Africa. The clove tree was introduced to the island in 1818
at about the same time the Sultan’s court was relocated here. Zanzibar
quickly became the world’s largest producer of cloves, and many fragrant
spice plantations still dominate the island. The Old town is a large and
impressive maze of narrow, winding streets with quaint shops, bazaars,
mosques, and white washed houses. Sightseeing on foot is recommended to
appreciate Zanzibar’s many handsomely carved, brass-studded doors, some
of which are undergoing restoration to their original splendor. Between
40,000 and 45,000 slaves’ were sold annually in the Island’s thriving
19th Century slave market. The people’s palace {formerly the
Sultan’s palace} is set a midst gardens on the seafront; and the house
occupied by Livingston prior to his last expedition is near the dhow harbor.
Zanzibar Museum contains portraits of the
Sultan’s relics of explorers, and local arts and crafts. The old Town
is also the site of a Portuguese fort built in 1700 and the Beit-al-Ajaib
(House of Wonders), Zanzibar’s largest building. 7 kms north of the city
is the Marahubi palace, built for the harem of Sultan Sayyid Bargash,
who ruled from 1870 to 1888. The beautiful island of Zanzibar also has
many inviting, palm-fringed beaches with sparkling white sand and good
year-round swimming.
